Canadian immigration WARNS applicants to submit now,NOT LATER.
The Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has encouraged prospective
migrants to Canada to submit their application before the March, when he
meets with federal, provincial, and territorial officials to review
economic data and to determine if immigration levels should be changed.
Although he has promised the high levels of immigration would remain
during 2009, Kenney has warned that the Canadian immigration system must
remain flexible and responsive to the economy, and as such is subject to
contraction. Therefore, the Minister is encouraging prospective migrants
to lodge their Canadian visa appliactions sooner rather than later.
Currently, the Minister has given the go-ahead to the Canadian Immigration
and Citizenship (CIC) to approve between 240,000 to 265,000 new permanent
residents during this year so that the skills gaps can continue to be
filled and the economy can benefit from growth.
"We don’t want people coming to Canada and facing unemployment. We need
to be sensitive to the changing labour market, and if we need to make
modifications, we will," Minister Kenney said.
"We need to be flexible, prudent and ensure that our response to
short-term conditions does not counter out long-term goals, in which
immigration will play a significant role," he said.
"We don’t want to turn off the tap of the future growth that is
represented by immigration."
In related news, the numbers of British moving to Canada has increased in
the past year, with almost 8,000 moving to Canada in the first three
quarters of 2008. According to the CIC, the number of British citizens
applying to emigrate to Canada in the same period reached 12,000.
They claim the sunshine, education and clean cities are the major
attraction for Brits, who are now finding themselves deeper in the
recession than they would like to be.
